Photography Glass – My Way
Nowadays with many exhibitions being online the requirement for photographs of artwork is becoming more and more common. I always find it tricky to capture the art of clear glass through a lens. Keen to keep all things simple I use daylight as a backdrop to be getting a good image, well I think so! Two photographers who know my work and whose work I admire are Angus Mackay www.facebook.com/angusmackayphotography and Duncan Mclachlan www.facebook.com/StudiograffPhoto However when I need a quick “snap” to record a piece of work for my own archives then holding glass up to a clear sky gives me the results I was looking for. Many years ago, when working at Dounreay when they had a large photographic department I was introduced to this method by Peter Stevens and it is one I still use. A lot of my photographs in the gallery section were “taken” this way. Of course when the demand for something a bit different occurs such as the upcoming online exhibition by the Society of Caithness Artists societyofcaithnessartists.co.uk My usual method is to photograph glass on the roof of my car, sometimes when no car available then I pile up boxes on a stool to get an effect. I do get funny looks outside my studio when attempting to get the perfect shot, but you must do this for art don’t you? The photographs just give a hint of my style which no doubt will be frowned upon by those more in the know!

At least the river is not too high!
