BLOG – 35 YEARS AGO BLOG 31

Whilst looking for one thing I found some early graphic designs for Glass Creations by Duncan McLachlan. We used these for years, well up until 2005 when Maureen died. Then I went through all the compliment slips and calling cards crossing out Maureen’s name with thick black pen! Silly, eh? The design of the text was my idea, I think. I wanted the lettering to be as if the words were written in glass tubing and the effect is to my eye pleasing but what do I know?

The logo of Glass Creations was also designed with thoughtful studying what the end result would look like and incorporated the text style see on the various cards. For some reason I didn’t extend the designs to letterheads and thought I could do it easier myself using the computer. It was easy to create something but not get the effect I wanted especially when the printers ink became exhausted. I managed to get some weird colours which I pretended was deliberate but of course it was all a mistake. Or was it? Think I will have to revisit that time in the history of Glass Creations.

We did print price lists using a design similar to that on the complimentary cards and having access to a colour photocopier helped produce some adequate results. This approach was also using din making price tags. I wasn’t that bothered about pricing my work and if I had my way would put “POA” on everything! I was outvoted and so everything in the studio had a price on. I daresay if I stood still long enough, I would be priced! Apparently, we were told that it is illegal to display items for sale in a shop that were not priced. I am not convinced this is true.

Getting the right identity was important for me. I wanted to let everyone know that what I made in glass was not Caithness Glass. I make my glass objects in Caithness. But my glass originates as tubing and rod from Europe not Caithness.
