BLOG – 35 YEARS AGO BLOG 30
Gee how I hate paperwork! Such a waste of my time. Can’t believe years ago I used to keep a record of everything I sold. I lie; I didn’t as it was Maureen that enjoyed that. I mean really enjoyed it. Logging all sales in various imaginative orders either by dates, subject or price.
Worse of all are “doing” accounts. In thirty-five years, I seem to have been involved with this thorny subject at least thirty-five times. Even when Maureen was in charge, I used to have to answer trick questions such as “where is that receipt for postage, six months ago?”
I suppose I am a bit of an ancient caveman (ever met a modern one?) when it comes to figures as I prefer paper so just love (not)_ collecting monthly statements from my bank. At times of preparing the books for my accountant I arrange all papers across the carpet in what I think is a very creative style. All arranged for easy access and that’s how they stay for a week while I ponder on doing the least amount of effort for the greatest gain.
There is so much misunderstanding when it comes to subjects that everyone thinks is easy. If you are good with IT and numbers then “doing” accounts are easy, especially when you are not personally involved in the business. If someone challenges me on what an expense was for then I feel extremely upset as if they are questioning my credibility. Its that feeling that is unique and is the complete opposite of practicality. One would not measure the heat of water with a tape measure so why measure my creativity with sums that make me cry. And boy do I cry. I don’t think I have ever compiled information in such a way that my accountant accepts without question. Then there is the ‘orrible tax returns forms!!!!!!!!!!
Recently I paid a tax bill which I thought was paid but obviously HMRC know best. Think it was about 12p!! I paid by cheque and awaited the surcharge!!!!
