BLOG – 35 YEARS AGO BLOG 13
I have known for a long time, ever since I started messing around with glass and flame just how attractive the process is. I only have to light a burner and before I have even picked up a glass rod or tube people are watching. Great for my vanity but rubbish for business unless those that view buy!
Interesting to see what and how other artists interpret my studio and work. I have had my studio painted by at least three different artists. I have been presented with a sandblasted Glass Creations logo and also an image of my workshop sandblasted on sheet glass. I have had a wooden shield made customised to represent Glass Creations. In addition, my portrait working on the flame has been captured on film and canvas!
One artwork depicting Maureen and all that Glass Creations is and was really strikes such a fond memory with me that I wish to share the meaning of some of the imagery used in this creation.
First to mention is that Maureen liked bird watching and baking cakes so that explains picture of a cake and Maureen looking through binoculars. She also loved ten pin bowling and sat on several committees helping out with a couple of charities and worked at coffee mornings. We met many years ago in London at Euston railway station. Maureen was trained as a nurse, loved Radio 2 and also fond of completing crosswords. She helped me as Editor of the British Society of Scientific Glassblowers by placing each Journal in its envelope.
Glass creations had issues with sea gulls and many a time Maureen could be seen trying to move them on from our studio. Her favourite drink was Pepsi Max and read many magazines.
The bell on the right of the drawing has words written on it to celebrate our fifteenth wedding anniversary which was on January 25th, 1990. Maureen died fifteen years after this so one could say this picture represents a half-way point! Of course, no one knew that at the time. Thank goodness!!!
